EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

As environmental education evolves in Serbia and Montenegro, LOA considers that for education efforts to be lasting, we must work through the educational system and with classroom teachers, and through them, the children. Educating the students in the beauty and wonder of birds makes them aware of the problems which many species are facing.

Environmental Education

Education activities are carried out for the LOA by our education officer, Marina Drndarski, a primary school biology teacher. Presenting programs to schoolchildren and their teachers, she is working with schools to promote bird issues, and is heavily involved in the Teacher Training & Development and other environmental education training workshops. This representation spots insure LOA a role of a stakeholder in environmental education in Serbia and Montenegro, and with that a role in education about and for birds.

Serbian Ornithological Nomenclature

In addition, since we have no officially accepted common bird names, it is not a rare case to find two or more different common names in use for the same species. Even worst, sometimes the same common name is applied to different species. Aiming to change that situation, the revision of the Serbian nomenclature of the European birds is coordinated for the LOA by our Z. Stanimirović.

In future, LOA aims to undertake the following:

  • Publish bird-teaching books (First Field Guide to the Common Birds and Birding for Beginners are currently being prepared).
  • Publish the first ever (in Serbian language) complete field guide covering all bird species of the region.
  • Celebrate birds through the Bird Races (organized by LOA for the first time in June 2003), next one being planned for the May 2004.
  • Offer bird identification courses to interested parties.
  • Offer to do birdwalks with children (and adults) at schools or in communities.
  • Prepare talks to be given to schools.
  • Encourage starting Jr Bird Clubs in schools.
  • Continue bird activity presentations at environmental education teacher workshops.
