CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH

LOASM seeks to expand our knowledge on birds so that wise management decisions can be made, and has always maintained links with other non-governmental organizations which concern themselves with policies relating to bird protection, conservation and environmental education.

Birds in Europe - their conservation status II

In the 2003, in conjunction with the Bird Protection and Study Society of Vojvodina (BPSSV) and Montenegrin Center for Protection and Research of Birds, LOA took part in the BirdLife International’s project “Birds in Europe - their conservation status II” (BiEII). Together with Slobodan Puzovic, our Dragan Simic was one of the two national BiEII project coordinators. In a way, BiEII is “the end of a childhood” of Serbian ornithology: this is the first time ever that we have an estimates of the population sizes and trends for about 250 breeding species, which should prove to be an important conservation tool.

Hunting Ban Requested

Using dogs, one hunter can expect 3 to 10 Quails per morning. In order to satisfy the ‘customer demand, hunting agencies are often using tape recorders prohibited by both Serbian Law on Hunting and the Bern Convention, enabling a single hunter to kill 300 Quails per morning. Therefore, LOA and BPSSV, together with Ecological Movement of Stanisic, requested the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry to remove Common Quail and Turtle Dove from the game bird list and permanently prohibit further hunting.

Bird Records

LOA also collects data by individuals on bird sightings and nest records. If you have published or unpublished data on birds of the Serbia and Montenegro, we would appreciate receiving a copy (see Contact details bellow).

On going research projects include:

  • Long-eared Owl Winter Roosts (together with the BPSSV)
  • International Waterbird Census (January counts)
